Floriana

Fortified capital suburb

About Floriana

Floriana is Valletta's fortified suburb — a planned 17th-century town built by the Knights of St. John as an outer defence ring around the capital. The massive bastions that form Floriana's boundary are among the most impressive military fortifications in Malta, designed by the Italian engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani and giving the town its name.

Despite being adjacent to the capital, Floriana has its own distinct identity. It's home to Malta's national football stadium, the Argotti Botanical Gardens, and several government ministries. The granaries — massive stone silos built into the bastions — are a distinctive landmark and once critical to Malta's grain supply. The town's main square hosts Malta's largest political rallies and national events.

Property in Floriana offers exceptional value. You get the same proximity to Valletta — a 5-minute walk to the capital's restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions — but at more affordable prices. The housing stock is predominantly traditional townhouses within the fortifications, many with original architectural features, high ceilings, and Maltese balconies.

The town's grid-plan streets mirror Valletta's rational design, making it easy to navigate and surprisingly walkable. Parking is easier than in Valletta, and the main bus terminus sits at the edge of town, giving you connections to every destination on the island. You're essentially living in Valletta's orbit without paying Valletta prices.

Floriana has its own amenities — churches, schools, shops, and restaurants — but the real attraction is Valletta's entire offering within walking distance. Culture lovers appreciate the proximity to museums, theatres, and historic sites, while professionals value the easy commute to government offices and the capital's business district.
