Kalkara

Kalkara is one of Malta's most deceptive villages — tiny in size but disproportionately rich in history and significance. Squeezed between the fortified cities of Birgu and the open waters of the Grand Harbour entrance, it covers just a few hundred metres of shoreline. Yet within that compact footprint lie two of Malta's most distinctive landmarks: Fort Rinella, a Victorian-era fortress guarding the harbour approach, and the Malta Film Studios, whose water tanks have hosted productions from Gladiator to Game of Thrones.

The village clusters around Rinella Creek, a sheltered inlet where traditional Maltese luzzu boats are still built and repaired by hand. The boatyard is one of the few remaining places where these iconic colourful fishing vessels are crafted using traditional methods, and the sight of carpenters working on the steeply-prowed boats against the backdrop of the fortifications is like stepping into a different century. The creek itself is peaceful in a way that seems impossible given its proximity to the Grand Harbour's industrial heritage — no container ships, no cruise liners, just small boats and occasional swimmers.

Fort Rinella dominates the headland. Built by the British in the late 19th century to protect the harbour from Italian warships, it houses one of only two Armstrong 100-ton guns ever made — a cannon so massive that it required a crew of 35 men and could fire a one-ton shell over three miles. The fort is now a museum, and historical re-enactments see the cannon fired (with blanks) to the delight of visitors. The film studios next door are equally significant — the massive water tanks, built for submarine films during World War II, have made Kalkara an unlikely Hollywood hub.

Property in Kalkara offers harbour-side living at village prices. The housing stock is a mix of traditional townhouses along the creek and modest apartment blocks inland, with newer developments creeping in along the waterfront. The location is superb — quiet enough to escape the tourist crowds, yet walkable to Birgu's marina and restaurants, and connected to Valletta by the ferry service that stops just 10 minutes away on foot. The Smart City development on the eastern edge, a planned technology park that has been slow to materialise, continues to shape the area's trajectory.

For buyers who want waterfront property without waterfront prices, Kalkara is increasingly discovered. The village has a strong community feel, excellent seafood restaurants, and one of the quietest locations in the harbour area. The combination of history, scenery, and relative affordability makes it one of Malta's most distinctive residential propositions.
