Munxar vs Qala
Side-by-side comparison of property prices, lifestyle, and practical info to help you choose the right area.
Summary
Both villages share near-identical lifestyle ratings — nightlife scores just 1 out of 10, while safety rates 9 and beaches score 8. Property prices are very affordable in both, with limited housing stock frequently coming up for sale. Neither has local shops, cafes, or restaurants beyond basics, and public transport scores poorly at 2 out of 10 in each. Munxar sits above Xlendi on Gozo's south coast with a 5-minute drive to Xlendi's beach and dining, and the Mgarr ferry is 20 minutes away by car. Qala sits on Gozo's eastern tip with views across to Malta, just 10 minutes from the Mgarr ferry and 12 minutes from Victoria.
Munxar's 1,500 residents benefit from access to Ta' Cenc plateau walks and a strong traditional community atmosphere. Qala's 1,700 residents have Hondoq ir-Rummien swimming cove and Dahlet Qorrot fishing harbour on the doorstep. Airport connections take 80 minutes from Qala versus over 90 from Munxar, including the ferry crossing.
Living in Munxar
Munxar is a small village on Gozo's south coast, perched on the cliffs between Sannat and Xlendi. The name means 'bucksaw' in Maltese, supposedly referring to the jagged shape of the coastline below the village. It's one of Gozo's least-known villages — most visitors drive past it on their way to Xlendi without realising it's there. The village centre is tiny — a church, a square, and a few streets of traditional houses. But Munxar's real identity is tied to the coastline below: Ta' Cenc plateau extends to its west, and the cliffs between Munxar and Xlendi contain some of Gozo's most dramatic coastal scenery. Mgarr ix-Xini, the fjord-like inlet shared with Sannat, is accessible from Munxar's side. Property in Munxar is very affordable, even by Gozo standards. Traditional houses with sea views are available at prices that seem extraordinary given the coastal position. The village has minimal amenities — a church, a social club, and not much else. Xlendi's restaurants are a five-minute drive.
Highlights
- Cliff-top position above Xlendi Bay
- Access to Ta' Cenc plateau walks
- Very affordable even by Gozo standards
- Dramatic coastal scenery on the doorstep
- Five minutes from Xlendi's restaurants
Living in Qala
Qala sits on Gozo's easternmost point — the first and last village seen by anyone arriving by ferry from Malta. The name means 'rocks' in Arabic, and the village is built on a rocky plateau with views across the Gozo Channel to Malta's northern coast. On a clear day, you can see the entire northern coastline of Malta stretching away to the west. The village is one of Gozo's quieter settlements, with a traditional square, a baroque church, and streets that feel more like a village than a town. Hondoq ir-Rummien, a small swimming cove below the village, is popular with locals and almost untouched by tourism. Dahlet Qorrot, a tiny fishing harbour on the north side, is where Gozitan fishermen still bring in the daily catch. Property in Qala is affordable and peaceful. The village attracts buyers who want Gozitan village life without the tourist traffic of Xlendi or Marsalforn. The views toward Malta give the eastern properties a premium, but prices overall remain low by Maltese standards.
Highlights
- Easternmost point of Gozo with views to Malta
- Hondoq ir-Rummien — hidden swimming cove
- Dahlet Qorrot — tiny working fishing harbour
- Affordable, untouristed village life
- Rocky coastal walks along the eastern cliffs
