Traditional southern town near dramatic coast

A large southern town above the Blue Grotto — affordable, traditional, and close to some of Malta's most dramatic coastal scenery.

Walkability
Moderate. Town centre walkable. Hilly terrain. Car needed for reaching the coast and commuting.
Parking
Good. Ample street parking. Easy compared to central Malta.
Noise
Low. Quiet residential atmosphere. Tourist traffic near Blue Grotto in summer.
Transport
Limited. Buses to Valletta (35 min). Infrequent. Car recommended.

Wied iz-Zurrieq, the valley that descends to the sea at Zurrieq's edge, is where fishermen launch the boats that take tourists to the Blue Grotto. The cave gets its name from a British soldier who, during the colonial period, compared the blue light inside to the Grotta Azzurra in Capri. In winter storms, waves shoot through the cave arch with enough force to spray the roadside cafe 20 metres above.
