San Gwann sits on one of the highest points in central Malta, and cart ruts carved into the limestone here are among the deepest on the island. Their purpose is still debated — some archaeologists believe they were irrigation channels, others that they guided sleighs transporting stone blocks. The Xrox il-Maghla Megalithic temple site, tucked between modern apartment blocks, is one of Malta's most incongruous ancient sites.
