Valletta Malta

Historic capital of culture

Malta's UNESCO-listed capital — a compact fortified city of baroque architecture, rooftop views, and cultural life lived on foot.

Walkability
Exceptional. Everything within a 15-minute walk. Steep streets heading toward the harbour can be challenging.
Parking
Extremely limited. A few public car parks at the city gates. Most residents rely on the CVA underground system or don't own cars.
Noise
Moderate. Tourist crowds by day, quiet residential atmosphere by night. Occasional fireworks from festas across the harbour.
Transport
Central bus terminus just outside the city gates with routes across the entire island. Ferry to Sliema from the Valletta waterfront.

Valletta was the first city in Europe to be designed on a grid plan, decades before Mannheim and Barcelona attempted similar layouts. The city was built in just 15 years after the Great Siege of 1565, funded by a pan-European campaign — essentially a 16th-century crowdfunding effort. Its original name was Humilissima Civitas Vallettae — Most Humble City of Valletta.
