A hilltop village above Gozo's best beach and the world's oldest freestanding temples — 5,500 years of history meets golden sand.

Walkability

Parking
Good. Village has adequate parking. Beach car park fills in summer.
Noise
Very low. Quiet village. Beach gets busy in summer. Temple site has tourist traffic.
Transport
Moderate. Buses to Victoria (8 min) and Marsalforn. Seasonal beach service.

Ggantija means 'belonging to the giants' — early Maltese couldn't believe humans had built structures with stone blocks weighing up to 50 tonnes. Calypso's Cave, overlooking Ramla Bay, is traditionally identified as the location where the nymph Calypso held Odysseus captive for seven years in Homer's Odyssey. The cave has collapsed and is currently unsafe to enter, but the viewpoint above it remains one of Gozo's finest.
