RAF Luqa was one of the most active airbases in the Mediterranean during WWII. The airfield was bombed over 3,000 times — more than any other single target in the Maltese islands. The parish church survived despite taking a direct hit that destroyed the roof. The town's residents sheltered in catacombs beneath the church during air raids.
