Paola was originally called Rahal Gdid — 'New Town' — when Grand Master de Paule founded it in 1626. It's still called that by many older Maltese. The town sits above the Hypogeum, a three-level underground necropolis carved from solid limestone around 3000 BC that was accidentally discovered in 1902 when workers were digging a reservoir. It's one of the world's most remarkable prehistoric sites.
