Swieqi was agricultural land well into the 20th century — the water channels that give it its name irrigated citrus groves and vegetable fields. The transformation from farmland to one of Malta's most expensive postcodes happened in barely 40 years. Madliena, a sub-area of Swieqi, is named after Mary Magdalene and has some of the highest property values on the island.
