Xlendi's name may derive from a shipwrecked vessel called the Shilandi that sheltered in the bay during a 16th-century storm. Underwater, the bay holds Roman-era remains including anchors and amphorae — evidence that ships have been sheltering here for over two millennia. The village was a tiny fishing hamlet until the 1960s tourism boom.
