Ottoman forces used Marsaskala's harbour during the Great Siege of 1565 — the main invasion force landed at nearby Marsaxlokk Bay. St. Thomas Tower, built by the Knights in 1614 to guard against future invasions, still stands at the harbour entrance. The town's festa of the Assumption in August features a traditional regatta of decorated fishing boats.
