Xghajra's coastal watchtower, built by the Knights in the 17th century, was part of a chain of signal towers that communicated with Valletta by lighting fires on the roof. The village was farmland until the 20th century, and older residents remember when the area was open fields with a clear line of sight to the Grand Harbour fortifications.
