Fortified capital suburb
Valletta's fortified suburb — a planned 17th-century town with national landmarks, botanical gardens, and affordable access to the capital.
Floriana's underground granaries — known as il-Fosos — are a network of stone-lined pits dug into the bastions that could store enough grain to feed Malta for months during a siege. They were critical during WWII and are still intact beneath the main square. The town was almost named 'Borgo Vilhena' after the Grand Master who commissioned it, but the nickname Floriana — after his Florentine engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani — stuck instead.
