Floriana Malta

Fortified capital suburb

Valletta's fortified suburb — a planned 17th-century town with national landmarks, botanical gardens, and affordable access to the capital.

Walkability
Good. Flat grid streets. Walkable to Valletta in 5 minutes. Everything in the capital is accessible on foot.
Parking
Moderate. Better than Valletta. Street parking available. Bus terminus area can be busy.
Noise
Moderate. National events at the granaries can be loud. Normal days are quiet residential. Football matches generate noise.
Transport
Excellent. Malta's main bus terminus sits between Floriana and Valletta — every route on the island passes through.

Floriana's underground granaries — known as il-Fosos — are a network of stone-lined pits dug into the bastions that could store enough grain to feed Malta for months during a siege. They were critical during WWII and are still intact beneath the main square. The town was almost named 'Borgo Vilhena' after the Grand Master who commissioned it, but the nickname Floriana — after his Florentine engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani — stuck instead.
