Rabat Malta

Historic inland town with village soul

A historic inland town neighbouring Mdina, built on Roman catacombs and traditional Maltese village life — authentic, affordable, and distinctive.

Walkability
Good in the town centre. Hilly in parts. Daily amenities walkable but most residents drive for commuting.
Parking
Good. Much easier than coastal areas. Street parking widely available. Some congestion near Mdina gates during tourist season.
Noise
Low. Quiet residential streets. Occasional festa fireworks. Very peaceful compared to the coastal strip.
Transport
Moderate. Buses to Valletta take 25–30 minutes. Less frequent than coastal routes. Car recommended.

According to tradition, St. Paul lived in a cave beneath Rabat for three months after being shipwrecked on Malta in AD 60. The cave is now a shrine beneath the Church of St. Publius. Rabat's annual festa of St. Paul features one of the largest fireworks displays in Malta — the town takes its patron saint very seriously.
