The Xemxija Heritage Walk passes Roman-era apiaries — stone structures carved to house beehives — that are among the best-preserved in the Mediterranean. The bees produced honey that was considered a luxury product across the Roman Empire. Malta's ancient name, Melita, may derive from meli (honey) in Greek — and Xemxija's apiaries are physical proof of why.
