The Salina salt pans near Qawra have produced salt since Roman times. During the Great Siege of 1565, the Knights deliberately flooded the pans to prevent the Ottoman army from using the flat ground as a camp. The salt produced here is still sold as a boutique product — 'Maltese sea salt' harvested by hand from pans that are over 2,000 years old.
