Mgarr Malta

Agricultural village with oversize church

Malta's farming heartland — strawberry fields, vineyards, an oversize parish church, and farmhouse properties surrounded by working countryside.

Walkability
Limited. Village centre walkable. Countryside is walkable but you'll need a car for everything else.
Parking
Excellent. No parking pressure. Ample space.
Noise
Very low. Agricultural quiet. Occasional farm vehicles and church bells.
Transport
Poor. Infrequent buses to Valletta (25 min). Car essential.

Mgarr's parish church was planned to be the largest in Malta, but construction stalled when funds ran dry. The incomplete dome is topped with a flat cap that locals call 'il-kappa' — a source of endless jokes and fierce local pride. The church is sometimes called 'the rotunda that never was'. Mgarr's strawberry festival each April sees 26 tonnes of strawberries consumed in a single day.
